Students on Ice:  Expedition Arctic 2014 Contest

This contest is open to Canadian residents only and is governed by Canadian law.


The Expedition Arctic, 2014 trip to the Arctic (the “Contest”) begins on January 6, 2014 at 9:00 a.m. Eastern Time (“ET”) and ends on May 15, 2014 at 6:00 p.m. ET (the “Contest Period”).


Contest is open to all legal residents of Canada between the ages of 14 to 18 years old and be enrolled in a secondary school institution (or be home-schooled), except employees, representatives or agents (and those with whom such persons are domiciled, whether related or not) of Canadian Museum of Nature, Habitat Seven, Students on Ice (the “Sponsors”), its Board of Trustees, affiliates, prize suppliers and advertising/promotion agencies (collectively, the “Contest Parties”), and any individual who has previously been awarded a scholarship to participate on a Students on Ice expedition.


No purchase necessary. To enter, during the Contest Period you must visit the website www.expeditionarctic.ca and sign up to the contest following the online instructions. Facebook and Twitter accounts are not necessary but highly recommended as it allows participants to collect more points and therefore increase their chance to win.

Once signed up, participants will receive weekly questions that can be answered by visiting www.expeditionarctic.ca. Correct answers to these questions will earn them ten IQ points. Participants will also be awarded one IQ point for every learning object they post to Facebook or Twitter. The point of the game is to gather as many points as possible.

Each participant will be able to follow their progress by visiting the site and by consulting the leaderboard found at www.expeditionarctic.ca. The winner will be the participant who has gathered the most points in the period between January 6th 2014 to May 15th 2014, 6:00PM EST. The winner will be awarded a spot (FREE OF CHARGE) on the 2014 Students on Ice Arctic expedition.

All Entries are subject to verification at any time.  The Sponsor reserves the right, in its sole and absolute discretion, to require proof of identity and/or eligibility (in a form acceptable to the Sponsor – including, without limitation, government issued photo identification) to participate in this Contest.  Failure to provide such proof to the satisfaction of the Sponsor in a timely manner may result in disqualification.


Grand Prize:  There will be one (1) Grand Prize won consisting of participation on the Arctic Youth Expedition 2014 with departure from Ottawa with an approximate retail prize value of $10,000 CAD. Expedition fees do not include travel to and from Ottawa.


On May 17, 2014 in Ottawa, ON at approximately 12:01a.m. ET, the winner will be determined as the contestant who has gathered the most points and is at the head of the leader board.  The winner must be between 14 and 18 years of age and be a Canadian citizen and/or permanent resident, residing in Canada.

If more than one winner is declared due to the same amount of points being scored by more than one individual, by the aforementioned date and time of the contest closing, a draw will be held by the organization offering the grand prize, Students on Ice, on May 17, 2014, to determine the final winner.

The Sponsor or its designated representative will make a minimum of three (3) attempts to contact the winner by telephone or email (using the information provided on the Sign Up Form) within four (4) business days of the end of the contest.  If a selected entrant cannot be contacted within four (4) business days of the end of the contest, or if there is a return of any notification as undeliverable; then he/she will be disqualified (and will forfeit all rights to the applicable Prize). The sponsor will then declare the winner to be the person occupying the second place on the leaderboard.


Before being declared A CONFIRMED PRIZE winner, the winning participant will be required to: (a) correctly answer a mathematical skill-testing question without mechanical or other aid; and (b) sign and return within five (5) business days of notification the Sponsor’s declaration and release form, which (among other things): (i) confirms compliance with these Rules; (ii) acknowledges acceptance of the applicable Prize as awarded; (iii) releases the Contest Parties and each of their respective officers, directors, agents, representatives, successors and assigns (collectively, the “Releasees”) from any and all liability in connection with this Contest, his/her participation therein and/or the awarding and use/misuse of the applicable Prize or any portion thereof; and (iv) agrees to the publication, reproduction and/or other use of his/her name, address, voice, statements about the Contest and/or photograph or other likeness without further notice or compensation, in any publicity or advertisement carried out by or on behalf of the Sponsor in any manner whatsoever, including print, broadcast or the internet.  If a selected entrant: (a) fails to correctly answer the skill-testing question; (b) fails to return the properly executed Contest documents within the specified time; and/or (c) cannot accept the applicable Prize as awarded for any reason; then he/she will be disqualified (and will forfeit all rights to the applicable Prize) and the Sponsor reserves the right to award the prize to the contestant occupying he second place on the leader.

They must also:

  • Submit a completed application form with 2 letters of reference.
  • Understand that this is an educational expedition, not a vacation. All students must be committed to participate fully in all aspects of the mandatory education program and research activities prior to and during the expedition.
  • Accept the responsibility to act as an ambassador for their communities and educational institutions.
  • Possess a passport or have started the process of obtaining a passport.


Expedition fees do not include travel to and from the gateway city.

  • Your independent travel to and from Ottawa
  • The cost of your travel visa or other travel documentation
  • Airport taxes and reciprocity fees (varies depending on expedition, gateway cities and group flight routes)
  • Personal expedition clothing
  • Personal medical and travel insurance


All Entries become the property of the Sponsor. This Contest is subject to all applicable federal, provincial and municipal laws.  The decisions of the Sponsor with respect to all aspects of this Contest are final and binding on all entrants without right of appeal, including, without limitation, any decisions regarding the eligibility/disqualification of Entries and/or entrants.  By participating in this Contest, you are agreeing to be legally bound by the terms and conditions of these Rules.

The Releasees will not be liable for: (i) any failure of any Device during the Contest; (ii) any technical malfunction or other problems relating to the telephone network or lines, computer on-line systems, servers, access providers, computer equipment or software; (iii) the failure of any Entry to be received for any reason, including, but not limited to, technical problems or traffic congestion on the Internet or at any website; (iv) any injury or damage to an entrant’s or any other person’s computer or other device related to or resulting from participating in the Contest; and/or (v) any combination of the above.

In the event of a dispute regarding who submitted an Entry, Entries will be deemed to have been submitted by the authorized account holder of the email address submitted at the time of entry.  “Authorized account holder” is defined as the person who is assigned an email address by an internet provider, online service provider, or other organization (e.g. business, educational institute, etc.) that is responsible for assigning email addresses for the domain associated with the submitted email address. An entrant may be required to provide proof (in a form acceptable to the Sponsor – including, without limitation, government issued photo identification) that he/she is the authorized account holder of the email address associated with the Entry in question.

The Sponsor reserves the right, subject only to the approval of the Régie des alcools, des courses et des jeux (the “Régie”) in Quebec, to withdraw, amend or suspend this Contest (or to amend these Rules) in any way, in the event of an error, technical problem, computer virus, bugs, tampering, unauthorized intervention, fraud, technical failure or any other cause beyond the reasonable control of the Sponsor that interferes with the proper conduct of this Contest as contemplated by these Rules.  Any attempt to deliberately damage any website or to undermine the legitimate operation of this Contest in any way (as determined by Sponsor in its sole and absolute discretion) is a violation of criminal and civil laws and should such an attempt be made, the Sponsor reserves the right to seek remedies and damages to the fullest extent permitted by law.  The Sponsor, with the consent of the Régie, reserves the right to cancel, amend or suspend this Contest, or to amend these Rules, without prior notice or obligation, in the event of any accident, printing, administrative, or other error of any kind, or for any other reason.

For Quebec residents:  Any litigation respecting the conduct or organization of a publicity contest may be submitted to the Régie des alcools, des courses et des jeux for a ruling.  Any litigation respecting the awarding of the prize may be submitted to the Régie only for the purpose of helping the parties reach a settlement.

By entering this Contest, each entrant expressly consents to the Sponsor, its agents and/or representatives, storing, sharing and using the personal information submitted with his/her Entry only for the purpose of administering the Contest and in accordance with Sponsor’s privacy policy (available at: http://www.nature.ca/en/privacy-notice,) unless the entrant otherwise agrees.

The Sponsor reserves the right, in its sole and absolute discretion, and without prior notice, to adjust any of the dates and/or timeframes stipulated in these Rules, to the extent necessary, for purposes of verifying compliance by any entrant or Entry with these Rules, or as a result of any technical or other problems, or in light of any other circumstances which, in the opinion of the Sponsor, in its sole and absolute discretion, affect the proper administration of the Contest as contemplated in these Rules, or for any other reason.

In the event of any discrepancy or inconsistency between the terms and conditions of these Rules and disclosures or other statements contained in any Contest-related materials, including, but not limited to: the Entry Form, Device and/or point of sale, television, print or online advertising; the terms and conditions of these Rules shall prevail, govern and control.
